the Suwannee Indian Mound

the Suwannee Valley Culture.( American native Mounds)

Lowndes County: Withlacoochee-Alapaha-Suwanee River Basin

According to Timucan Chiefdoms of Spanish Florida Volume 1: Assimilation (University Press of Florida 1998) by John E. Worth: "... the Suwannee Valley culture is ... [t]hought to have emerged ... around A.D. 900 ...Suwannee Valley ... occupied much of the ... Suwanee River watershed, including at least the middle to lower Suwannee River valley and most or all of the Santa Fe River valley. ... Suwannee Valley populations seem to have been ... distributed across the landscape in localized groups ... generally situated next to important sources of water, including lakes, springs, or rivers ... due in large part to the "patchy" darstic environment of the Suwannee River watershed, aboriginal populations tended to live in widely separated community clusters

The Florida National Forest has a rich heritage that extends 10,000-12,000 years. Prior to 1500 A.D., the heritage is considered prehistoric. It begins with the earliest American Native Floridians, the Paleo-Indians.

They lived in a time when Florida was much larger and drier.

The Paleo-Indians were hunters and gatherers who lived in small groups and hunted. The Paleo period in Florida is from 10,000-7,500- B.C.

From 7,500-500 B.C. the culture period is known as the Archaic, which is divided into three time frames – early, middle and late.

During the Early Archaic (7,500-5,000 B.C.,) people adapted to a warmer and moister environment. They lived in semi-nomadic groups, coming together at certain times to hunt, collect and trade, much as did my people up north.

The Middle Archaic (5,000-3,000 B.C.) is marked by a drier climate with

more lakes and rivers than before.

People lived in seasonal settlements and continued to hunt and gather.

During the Late Archaic (3,000-500 B.C.) the environment became similar to what we see today. People started living in permanent settlements and

distinct cultural variations developed. A unique technology began during

the Late Archaic-the development of pottery.

From 500 B.C. to A.D. 1500 various cultural groups developed throughout the state.

Each group had its own pottery styles and designs, ceremonies, political system and language variations.

In North and Central Florida the Americans natives were known as the Timucuans.

Also living in the National Forest area were the Northern Utina Timucuans and their cultural tradition is known as the Suwannee Valley Culture.

The historic period begins at A.D. 1500 and extends to the middle 1900s. The time is marked by the arrival of Europeans to Florida.

Both Spanish and French expeditions settled in Florida building forts and missions. Although there were many missions in Florida, we have no account of them on the National Forest.

During the 1700s, because of the attempts to assimilate by the Europeans there was a migration of American natives from other states into Florida. American Native people in Georgia, Alabama and South Carolina moved to what is now Florida between 1716 and 1763. Most of these people had Creek cultural origins. Collectively, they became known as the Seminole Indians.

The Paleo-Indians (Paleoindian)

The current view of the Paleoindian period envisions bands of hunters entering the North American continent around 17,000 years ago (15,000 rcbp) by crossing a land bridge that connected eastern Siberia with Alaska.

Creek people

I have had the great pleasure while traveling around Indian country of meeting and learning from a chief of the Creek people so you must know that I love and respect the people, however their land is in what is now called Georgia and were forced to relocate south after first contact. Know that I have been forced to relocate from much further north to Florida.

moved into the void in Florida settled on the land.

The Florida Trail in the Ocala National Forest

The Florida Trail in the Ocala National Forest is certified as

Florida National Scenic Trail, and has been called the “crown jewel”

of the Florida Trail system.

The Ocala National Forest lies between the Ocklawaha and St. Johns Rivers in central Florida. It has acreage in Putnam, Lake     and Marion Counties.  Interstate 75 parallels the forest on the west, while Interstates 95 and 4 are accessible on the east side.

Groups Ask Federal Govt. to Protect Florida Black Bear

WASHINGTON – The federal government should help ensure the future of the Florida black bear by applying the resources available under the Endangered Species Act, according to a lawsuit filed by a coalition of conservation and animal welfare organizations today. Defenders of Wildlife, The Fund for Animals, and Sierra Club challenged the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's decision not to list the critically imperiled Florida black bear under the Endangered Species Act.

The Florida panther (Puma concolor coryi), one of the most publicized endangered animals in the United States, has become a symbol for vanishing wildness. The state mammal of Florida, the panther has been featured on a postage stamp and is the subject of a special Florida vehicle license plate, with sales designated to support panther recovery efforts. The ongoing processes of planning for the restoration of the Everglades ecosystem (http://www.sfrestore.org/) and the development of a landscape conservation strategy for panthers (http://www.verobeach.fws.gov/msrp) involve numerous public policy issues affecting panther habitat. An objective evaluation of data on panther activity and habitat use is of critical importance to public policy and land-use decision making in South Florida and to the development of models that may influence these processes.

Alligators like the Crocodiles and Sharks have been around since Prehistoric times, unlike their ancestors the dinosaurs they have survived each and every catastrophe since that time, until now!

Man is their only enemy and man will be the end of them as well as many other plants, fish and animals, then we will end ourselves!

There is the possibility that alligators will stray into any waterway in Central Florida,

Alligators live in the sinkhole, adds some excitement to swimming so nearby! Sign says "Swimming area: Do not feed or molest alligators!

Alligators are one of the few species that will eat man, a little pay back don’t you think?

However, the most endangered species ever in Florida and

throughout the world is the true Traditional American native!

http://www.nbbd.com/godo/cns/

Timucuans Paleoindians

This is just a couple of the thousands of true

Traditional American natives that were throughout

Indian country before first contact, now there are just about

a hand full that are trying to hold onto their own ways.
